BiographyHistory

The firm M. L. Hutchinson was founded when Matthew Leighton Hutchinson took over the Glasgow Book Warehouse at 16 Collins Street West in Melbourne in 1877 from Robert Mackay. Active as a bookseller and publisher, Hutchinson's output included stories, historical fiction, and children's stories and poetry, some of it religious and for use in Sunday schools.

The bookshop moved to 305 Little Collins Street in 1895. Hutchinson had a stand for Australian publishers at the 1888 Melbourne Centennial Exhibition. When Matthew Leighton Hutchinson died in 1913 his son John continued the business, until the 1920s.
