BiographyHistory

Born the fourth son of Edward Hodgson, a vicar of Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England, and his wife Charlotte, nee Pemberton, Christopher Hodgson was educated at Eton and Cambridge. After arriving in Sydney in 1839, he followed his elder brother Arthur to Eton Vale station Darling Downs, Queensland in 1840.

In 1844 he participated in part of Ludwig Leichhardt's expedition to Port Essington. On his return to England he published his Reminiscences of Australia : With Hints on the Squatter's Life (1846) and became honorary vice-consul at Pau in Bayonne, and Caen, France, from late 1851 to early 1855.

In 1859 he was appointed consul and French consul at Hakodate, Japan. In 1861 he left the diplomatic service.
