Scrymgour and Sons was established in Adelaide in 1875 when the Scrymgour family bought the printing business Gall and Sheridan. George Scrymgour arrived in Adelaide in 1854 and worked for David Gall, who was his brother-in-law, as an engraver from 1858. Two sons, George and Edmund, had also worked in the business, Edmund completing a printing apprenticeship there in 1868.

As well as a broad range of printing, Scrymgour and Sons published the textbook series South Australian School Books, and material such as almanacs and road and rail guides. The business was fully-owned by the Scrymgour family for more than one hundred years, and continued to operate, as Scrymgour & Sons Pty Ltd (marketing and stationery) and Scrymgour Printers Pty Ltd (printing, manufacturing) into the twenty-first century, at 270 Angus Street Adelaide.
