Donna Maegraith went to school and university in Adelaide. She started writing poetry in the early 1970s; co-edited Dharma (1971-1975) and Real Poetry (1977-1978); and was poetry editor of Roadrunner (1978-79) and National Student (1979).

Maegraith read her poetry regularly at Friendly Street during 1977-1979, and at Writers' Week events during the Adelaide Festival of Arts in 1976, 1978 and 1980. She also read poetry at a number of Adelaide schools and helped organize readings at Adelaide beaches in the summer of 1978-1979.

Maegraith was a founding member of the Poets Union in Adelaide and attended the Union's national conferences in 1979 and 1980. She read her poetry at events in Melbourne, Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle and Brisbane and also hosted Angry Penguins, a poetry programme on Radio 5UV, in 1977-1978, She has read her poetry on ABC radio in Adelaide and Sydney, 5MMM. 3CR (Melbourne) and 2SER (Sydney).

Maegraith has worked as a journalist since 1977 and moved to Sydney in 1979 with her partner and their son. In 1997 she was a sub-editor of the Bulletin.
