James Booth, a medical doctor, was active in numerous community and religious organisations including literary groups. In the 1890s he was a member of the Brisbane Literary Circle, and in 1927 became president of the Australian Literary Society. Both Booth and his wife Angela Elizabeth Booth (nee Plover) (1869-1954) held strong ideas about racial purity, and promoted eugenics as an answer to social problems.
