Little is known of Goodrich's early life. Whilst living in England, he published a book of verses, I Too (1856), under the writing name 'Beelzebub', and also possibly a second work titled The Martyrs of Myletene [? Mitylene]. He migrated to New Zealand with his family in the later 1850s, before moving to Melbourne in 1858, where he established a pawn-broker's business in inner city Collingwood, which he ran until his death in 1878. His novel Raven Rockstrow is significant in that it was arguably the first novel to genuinely use Melbourne as a setting.
