Originally from Perth (Western Australia), Colin Lane began his career by performing fringe comedy in Melbourne during the late 1980s. This period also lead Lane to form a successful Melbourne-based partnership with fellow comedian Frank Woodley (q.v.). Better known as 'Lano and Woodley', the comedy duo have a reputation for live performances which draw on the conventions of slap-stick to move unpredictably between pre-written routine and chaotic improvisation.

The duo starred in their own television series, The Adventures of Lano and Woodley, which was produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in 1997 and 1999. They have also written and performed routines at various comedy festivals both in Australia and overseas, made numerous television appearances and co-authored one novel, Housemeeting (1996).

In 1994, 'Lano and Woodley' won the prestigious Perrier Award for best comedy show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

In 2018, he was nominated (along with Frank Woodley) for best comedy performer at the Helpmann Awards, for Lano & Woodley - Fly.
