BiographyHistory

'Lee Shrubb was born Liane Maxa Hauptmann, into the Jewish faith in Vienna in 1929. In 1937 her father obtained an Australian entry permit for the family, with the assistance of an uncle already living in Australia. The family left Vienna on 11 March 1938, the night of the Anschluss. On arrival in Sydney the family lived at Bondi, then moved to Pymble in 1942. Lee Shrubb attended Bondi Beach Public School, Sydney Girls' High, Hornsby Girl's High School and Frensham. With the declaration of war Shrubb's family, as Austrians, were classed as enemy aliens and were required for a time to report weekly to police, though Shrubb's father was later called up for duty. After receiving her Leaving Certificate in 1946, Shrubb studied philosophy at University of Sydney, where she meet Peter Shrubb.'
