BiographyHistory

Patrick Hore-Ruthven was the only child of former Governor-General of Australia, Lord Gowrie. He attended Cambridge University and after graduation joined the Rifle Brigade, serving in the Middle East during the Second World War. Seriously wounded in the Western Desert, he died in a military hospital in Libya.

Hore-Ruthven wrote several war poems. Some of them were published in English and Australian newspapers, and 14 were collected and published posthumously in a small volume in Australia (The Happy Warrior) and England (Desert Warrior). His letters have been collected by Ethel Anderson (qv).
