William Woolls was a clergyman, schoolmaster and botanist. He migrated to Australia at the age of sixteen, arriving in Sydney in 1832 on the Grecian, and began his career as a teacher. In 1841 he set up his own school at Parramatta, where he taught for twenty-five years. In 1873 he became a Church of England deacon. He wrote extensively about botany, publishing articles in the proceedings of the Linnean Society of London and elsewhere, as well as several books.

His published literary works include a number of single poems, including In Memory of My Dear Friend Mrs Statham Who Died January the 8th 1864 (1864).
