Author, scriptwriter, publisher and historian, Jim Poulter has been a social worker in the forensic psychiatry field. He has conducted research into the origins of Australian Rules, particularly in relation to Marn-Grook, a tribal Aboriginal game played all over Australia. Poulter's academic credentials include a Masters in Social Work from Monash University, a Diploma of Criminology from Melbourne University and a Diploma of Social Studies, also from Melbourne University. The Aboriginal theme to most of Poulter's books reflects his family's strong association (dating from 1840) with the Aboriginal community.

As well as the books listed here, Poulter edited Templestowe, A Folk History (1985), from his mother Hazel's notes on pioneer families and events. He also wrote the script for a television documentary, The Fighting Gunditjmara : A Tribe, a Soldier and a Fighter (circa 1980).
