An interior decorator by trade, S. D. Douglas was selected by the ABC in 1936 to collaborate on the writing of a radio play. The other two indiviudals, also with no previous experience in this field, were teachers Robert Leonard (lyricist) and Darrell Bruce (composer). On 8 June that year the trio's completed work, the musical comedy Comes the Spring, was broadcast live on 2FC.

Douglas had reportedly written at least five other radio plays, two of which were collaborations with Fred Whaite - Kabula Love Song and Moon Over Mexico. Neither of these musical plays is believed to have been produced for broadcast. Another of his known works was a light comedy without music titled Tweet, Tweet, the Birdies Sing.
