— Appears in: Quadrant , November vol. 67 no. 11 2023; (p. 95-96)

— Review of Media Monsters : The Transformation of Australia’s Newspaper Empires Sally Young , 2023 multi chapter work criticism
'Media bosses, like policemen, are not always loved but they do a difficult and essential job. The “monsters” in the title refers to the size media companies have reached over the years though, not to the personal characteristics of the leaders. That, as the saying goes, is another story—and a lively one.'

— Review of Paper Emperors : The Rise of Australia's Newspaper Empires Sally Young , 2019 single work non-fiction
'“Never trust a Sydney newspaper proprietor,” Sir Keith Murdoch told his son Rupert, who was in time to become one himself. The Sydney press lords were once a famously weird mob—and whether they remain so is an open question. The Packer dynasty; the odd couple of stately, unworldly Warwick Fairfax and his polar oppo-site R.A.G. (“Rags”) Henderson; and further back the neurotic and bullying Ezra Norton, son of Napoleon admirer John Norton, founder of the “awful” Truth, Australia’s most memorable scan-dal sheet. Their doings and frailties and those of the senior Murdoch dominate Sally Young’s lively and often fascinating Paper Emperors. Young is a Professor of Political Science at Melbourne University.'

1 Country Girl Robert Murray , 2016 single work essay
— Appears in: Quadrant , December vol. 60 no. 12 2016; (p. 72-73)
'The Eyre Peninsula, a vast plain of golden grain, golden fleece, golden grass, scrub, and not many people, is one of Australia’s less glamorous destinations, but unlike some who have reached the top, academic historian Jill Roe presents her rural homeland with affection. She likes the undistinguished scenery, the people—many of them her friends and relations—and the solid industriousness.' (Introduction)
1 We of the Next Era Robert Murray , 2016 single work review essay
— Appears in: Quadrant , November vol. 60 no. 11 2016; (p. 84-85)
'Daughter of the Territory is an excellent title for Jacqueline Hammar’s fine memoir—and valuable if informal social history—of the Northern Territory, but I wondered if “From We of the Never Never to Whitlam” might have been a good subtitle. She captures the Top End in a way redolent of Mrs Aeneas Gunn’s 1908 classic We of the Never Never and takes it jauntily through to the present day, though racing and thinning towards the end, seemingly under the weight of change since about 1970 and the pages needed to cover a century.' 1 1 y separately published work icon Sandbelters : Memoirs of Middle Australia Robert Murray , North Melbourne : Australian Scholarly Publishing , 2011 Z1853794 2011 single work biography 'Set largely in wartime and postwar Sandringham, in Melbourne's bayside 'sand belt' of suburbia, this is a story of an average Australian family in a middling period of our history, not so very long ago.

Author and journalist Robert Murray enlivens family records and memories handed down over generations with his own recollections of state schools, Sunday school, the boy scouts, 'wireless' series and work as a messenger boy with a now defunct newspaper, The Argus. He also writes about his parents' country origins among large extended families of their own; their memories help him bring the pioneering days of his own grandparents and great-grandparents to life.'
