At a sheriff's sale on 17 August 1842, Baptist minister James Allen 'bought the plant, stock-in-trade and copyright attached to the South Australian Register'. Allen sold his newspaper interests in 1845 (to John Stephens, q.v.) and returned to England where he gave lectures on South Australia. He later returned to the colony and published the Adelaide Times and the short-lived Allen's Twopenny Trash (1858). Allen also advertised a prospectus for 'Allen's New Weekly Political Journal' in late 1858, but this title did not eventuate. Allen moved to Hobart Town in about 1867 and worked as the editor of the The Mercury for two years prior to establishing the daily newspaper The Evening Mail and its companion paper The Weekly News.
