BiographyHistory

Christopher Allen is an art historian, critic, journalist and teacher. He completed his PhD at the University of Sydney in 1992 and since then has worked as a columnist and art critic for the Australian, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Financial Review, Art Monthly Australia and the Sydney Review. He has also lectured in art history at the National Art School, Sydney and since 2009 has been Head of Art at the Sydney Grammar School. His published works include Art in Australia : From Colonization to Postmodernism (1997), French Painting in the Golden Age (2003) and Jeffrey Smart : Unpublished Paintings 1940-2007 (2008). Allen is the grandson of the noted World War II Australian military figure Major-General Arthur Samuel 'Tubby' Allen and the son of writer Robert Allen. He is also the brother of writer, performer and filmmaker Richard James Allen.
