Millie Butt spent her youth growing up around Erambie, New South Wales. Butt finished her education halfway through her first year of high school. Her family needed financial help, and she was happy to earn money to contribute toward supporting her family. Her first job was seasonal work doing cherry picking. Butt also worked for the mission manager receiving her food rations in exchange for three hours of cleaning.
