1 The Unique Theatre of Stanley Walsh Michael Connor , 2019 single work essay
— Appears in: Quadrant , November vol. 63 no. 11 2019; (p. 96-98)
'Stanley Walsh is Australia’s least-known most successful playwright. Between 1970 and 1979 he wrote and directed seven melodramas which each ran from almost twelve months to an amazing eighteen months—yet when he died in 2008 he was probably best known for having been a producer of Neighbours.' 1 When Katharine Brisbane Went to the Theatre Michael Connor , 2019 single work essay
— Appears in: Quadrant , June vol. 63 no. 6 2019; (p. 83-86)
'Katharine Brisbane became the national drama critic for the Australian in 1967. For the next seven years she put it all together, writing the story of Australian theatre as a new chapter in our cultural history, as if it were important. Published on the leader pages of a young, lively newspaper, she told her readers what was happening on stages around the country and furnished them with names worth remembering. It was exciting stuff, regular reports for an episodic serial recounting the irresistible rise of a new generation of theatre-makers as they bludgeoned their way from university stages into the soon-to-be-funded mainstream. Dear God, some of them are still there.' (Introduction)

— Appears in: Quadrant , December vol. 60 no. 12 2016; (p. 96-98)
'I saw the wrong cast in the wrong play at the wrong theatre. The Gloria I saw was nothing like that. If only I had seen the play Lee Lewis wrote about instead of the one she directed.' (Introduction)
1 The Family Stories of the Behrendts Michael Connor , 2016 single work essay
— Appears in: Quadrant , November vol. 60 no. 11 2016; (p. 17-23)
'The article offers the author's insights related to indigenous Australians focusing on the family of Paul Behrendt and her daughter Larissa whose Aboriginal genealogies have been heard at an Australian court. It discusses the case of Australian journalist Andrew Bolt about race discrimination against Larissa wherein Bolt loses the case.' (Publication abstract)
1 What a Conservative Might Look Like on Stage Michael Connor , 2016 single work criticism
— Appears in: Quadrant , September vol. 60 no. 9 2016; (p. 82-85)
'Saturday July 30. Much publicity and crowds of theatregoers and curious in London for the opening of J.K. Rowling's play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The following day the rehearsal script was published internationally as an e-book and in a lavish hardback edition. Rave reviews for the play, huge sales for the script. First reviews of the play suggest it could easily run past 2018, when it is scheduled for transfer to Broadway. The play script, the mundane language and brief stage directions give only a slight indication of the miracles and magic that critics and audiences are reporting - a page-flicking lesson in theatre story-telling. Or cut to New York for the buff and bloody American Psycho: The Musical.' (Publication abstract)

1 Making Waves, Taking Bows Michael Connor , 2015 single work prose
— Appears in: Quadrant , January / February vol. 59 no. 1/2 2015; (p. 84-87)
'Teddy Tahu Rhodes is unsteady on his feet. Centre stage, the tall body waves a little from side to side. Irish singer Tommy Fleming is flat out in his room. Rumour has it, and I'm not sure if it's true, that Elaine Paige is unwell. The 870-seat Aurora Theatre is completely full, extra chairs are in the aisles. If there was an emergency there would be chaos. From somewhere offstage there is a loud echoing crash. The singer ignores the competition and leans slightly to one side to hold his balance. He ends "Some Enchanted Evening", and the audience response is enthusiastic. The Radiance of the Seas is pushing through the seas somewhere between Sydney and New Caledonia. It's about where I killed Gough Whitlam. That loud bang of a wave striking the ship has made me slightly uncomfortable.' (Publication abstract)
