BiographyHistory

Captain Sir Gordon Taylor was a fighter pilot in World War I, and first achieved fame in 1934 by flying with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith from Sydney to San Francisco in a single-engined Altair. Smith and Taylor then made the first air crossing of the Indian Ocean in 1939. Taylor served as an aircraft Captain on trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific transport operations during World War II, and in 1951, he made the first flight from Australia to South America, about which he wrote the book Frigate Bird.
