BiographyHistory

Wendy Ashwin has worked as a Senior Aboriginal Family Information Officer with the Department of Family and Children's Services in Western Australia. Her work involves tracing and reuniting families torn apart by government policies that created the Stolen Generations.

From the age of four, Ashwin lived with her family at Sister Kate's Children's Home, Perth, where her father, Jimmy Ashwin (q.v.), worked as a groundsman. Ashwin, the youngest of Jimmy and Ethel Ashwin's four children, was born with a hole in her eardrum. She spent a lot of time at Princess Margaret Hospital (Perth) where she completed much of her schooling. Even though she was not a state ward and had not been taken away from her parents, she considers herself a 'Homee', the name used by people who grew up at Sister Kate's Children's Home.
