BiographyHistory

Edgar Holt moved to Australia as a child and was educated at the Brisbane High School and the University of Queensland. He became a journalist, and during the 1930s was the drama editor for both the Melbourne Argus and the Melbourne Herald. In 1940 he moved to Sydney to join the Daily Telegraph, firstly as a journalist and later as the literary editor. After joining Smith's Weekly in 1944, he was appointed editor in 1947 and retained this position until 1950 when publication ceased. Holt wrote both plays and serious and satirical verses, displaying a particular affinity for the sonnet form.

  • Two novels published in London in the thirties have been incorrectly attributed to Holt, but these are by another Edgar Holt (Edgar Crawshaw Holt).
