Diane Barwick was a political and historical anthropologist 'renowned for her depth of knowledge about Aboriginal history and culture and her commitment to Aboriginal justice and equality.' She was a foundation member of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies (later the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies) in 1961 and founding editor of the journal Aboriginal History from 1977 to 1982. As editor and contributor to the journal 'she set a standard for Australian ethnohistory that was both scholarly and accessible to a wide audience.' Diane Barwick married Richard Barwick.
