Therese Carr was born and spent her formative first 4 years in the south-west of WA and then went to school in Nauru, PNG and Perth. She studied linguistics at UWA in Perth, pursuing an interest in language maintenance, and at a later date at UNE in Armidale, New South Wales achieving a research MA for a descriptive study of Wunambal, a Kimberley language, in 2000. She worked on language projects with the Kimberley Language Resource Centre in Hall’s Creek and then Fitzroy Crossing with a brief stint in Derby in the late 80s and early 90’s before gaining a teaching qualification and commencing work as a teacher-linguist in community school-based programmes in the East Kimberley. She later taught part-time in Batchelor Institute’s Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Languages and Linguistics while living in Kununurra, and is very proud to see past Batchelor Institute graduates from Kununurra presenting at this conference.
