Lundkvist was a Swedish poet, novelist and literary critic. He grew up in a rural community where he felt himself to be an outcast because of his appreciation for literature. He left school at the age of ten and thereafter educated himself. He moved to Stockholm when he was twenty and published his first books of poems a couple of years later.
