BiographyHistory

Spectrum Films is a post-production company with more than 400 local and international films to its credit. The company was founded in 1963 by Hans Pomeranz who had arrived in Australia from the Netherlands in 1954. After working for the ABC for almost ten years, largely in the area of current affairs production, Pomeranz set up Spectrum Film Producers (as it was originally known) in Willoughby on Sydney's North Shore. Among its earliest productions were Ride a White Horse (1968) and Stockade (1971), with the latter being produced by Pomeranz. The company also made numerous film and television productions, including sponsored documentaries and advertisements. During the 1970s Pomeranz and Spectrum Films played an integral part in the establishment of the Australian film industry by investing in such films as Phillip Noyce's Newsfront (1978) and Gillian Armstrong's My Brilliant Career (1979).

The 1980s and 1990s saw the company at the fore in helping establish Australia's reputation as an international force in post-production services through its involvement in such Hollywood films as Dead Poets Society (1989), The Truman Show (1998) and The Matrix (1999). Later international successes include : Mission Impossible 2 (2000), Charlotte Grey (2001) Rabbit-Proof Fence (2003), the 2004 Farscape television series, and Charlotte's Web (2006). The company's credits also include many films considered Australian classics, notably: Caddie (1976), The Picture Show Man (1977), The Odd Angry Shot and My Brilliant Career (1979), Mad Max 2 (1981), Careful He Might Hear You (1983), The Piano (1993), and The Custodian (1994).

Shortly before its fortieth year of operations Spectrum Films established a post-production facility at Fox Studios, enabling it to more readily service the industry needs.
