Hunter Kilner worked as a shearer and stock transporter before becoming a highly successful racehorse trainer. He left his work with racehorses to concentrate on bush poetry. His first book, Australian Bush Poetry, was published in 1998, and he launched his second book of bush poetry in 2002. His work has been read on ABC radio.
