BiographyHistory

The Countess of Jersey was the wife of the 7th Earl of Jersey, Governor of New South Wales from 1891 to 1893. She lived in Australia during her husband's term of office. She wrote a number of children's plays, travel articles, and an autobiography, Fifty-One Years of Victorian Life (1922). She was an enthusiastic proponent of the British Empire, and in 1902 helped found the conservative Victoria League, serving as its president for 26 years.
