  • Introduction

  • In the 1940s, Australia, as a nation, was challenged not only by the fighting in the Second World War , but also by trying to adapt to the intimidating changes in post-war society. As always, going to the theatre provided an escape for audiences. But as society changed, theatrical content changed and theatres in Australia had more issues to deal with than just the war. But some plays sought to express the struggles of post-war life in Australia on the national stage and, particularly in the case of The First Joanna by Dorothy Blewett, succeeded.
