A young man inclined to wanderlust (having been a cowboy in Mexico, a surveyor in Burma, and a gold prospector in South Africa) is forced into a stay-at-home existence in his home town in Yorkshire by the inheritance of a reasonable income. But at last, driven to desperate boredom, he embarks for Australia, where his fortunes change when he saves a young woman from drowning.
