Karla is Wiradjuri, her parents are from Mascot, Sydney. Karla Dickens was born in Sydney in 1967; the Year of the Referendum, that gave Aboriginal people human status within the nation called Australia.
Dickens is an established Wiradjuri (NSW) artist with solo and group exhibitions in Australia and Italy and work in major national collections including the National Museum of Australia. The winner of the 2013 NSW Parliament Aboriginal art prize, she also has an extremely strong track record in public and community art projects in regional Australia. She is represented by Andrew Baker, Art Dealer.
Her work explores the themes of politics, love, sex and the environment. Karla trained at the National Art School in Darlinghurst and won the Bundjalung Art Award at Lismore Regional Gallery in 2006.
