During World War Two, Sapper Bert Beros wrote this poem about one of his comrades, Aboriginal soldier, Private West, who attacked a Japanese machine-gun pit single handed. (Too Dark For the Light Horse, 1994) This poem was one of the inspirations behind the inaugural Coloured Diggers March.

'An oral account is presented relating to the nine Aboriginal and Thursday Island soldiers' that the author served with. They were good soldiers, two gave their lives for this country. One was awarded a posthumous Mentioned in Despatches. Finally, they were proud of their regiment and their regiment was proud of them.' (Source: Abstract)

At the time of his employment at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, David Huggonson researched and compiled an 'exhibition of photographs and documents depicting Aboriginal involvement in the Australian Army', through the Australian War Memorial. The exhibition toured Australia, then went on permanent display at the Australian War Memorial in 1993.
