Notes

  • Versions of this maudlin recruiting story (usually masquerading as a news item), were published in a number of Australian newspapers during 1916.

It remains to be established whether this was an original Australian story, or whether it might have been derived from an English source. This same 'white feather/red feather' theme also features in Alice Tomholt's wartime short story 'The Red Feather' (1918), where it is given a macabre twist.
