Video Game Adaptations
in an Australian context
(Status : Public)
Coordinated by Video Game Adaptations
  • University of Queensland Student Work, 2014

This exhibition is the result of undergraduate research for the Research Methods course (ENGL3000) at The University of Queensland.

  • Welcome

The Video Game Adaptations Austlit project seeks to contextualize Australia’s video game industry, and explicitly identifies the development of video game adaptations of film, television and literature. The research investigates the historical origins of Australian video game developers, and examines the industry’s contemporary economic and cultural environment. The project specifically explores Australian video game adaptations, in relation to their prevalence and impact within the industry. The project analyses film adaptations extensively, and presents intriguing research insights regarding literature-based adaptations and children’s educational adaptations.

  • Research Methodology and Sources

Video games is not a subject that has been thoroughly academically research, as such Auslit has no existing information with which to build upon to give an in depth overview into video games and the video game industry in Australia. Our aim was to link video games into the existing Auslit database, which was accomplished by connecting the video game adaptions we found to their literary sources. We also attempted to build our exhibition as both a starting point and gateway into incorporating Australian video games into the Auslit database so that further research can be added.

In order to establish this exhibition we used a number of different sources to build the wealth of information. We used academic journals and textbook literature to identify project avenues and as an academic basis for our research, we then incorporated information from video game organisations which provided the historical origins of the industry and information on future and current projects. We also used video gaming magazines in order to identify the current key players in the industry and to gain a better understanding of the current state of the Australian industry and the video game culture.

  • Overview of Findings

This exhibition investigates the Australian video game industry since its inception in the early 1980s. The project traces the evolution of Australian developers and companies, and explores the economic and cultural aspects that are unique to the industry. The research offers insight into the industry's turbulent nature, and the diverse aspects of video game development. The development of video games is explored, with regard to production demographics, narrative development, and character development.

The project offers explicit research on Australian adaptations of film, literature and educational children's game adaptations. The exhibition illustrates the position and popularity of adaptations within the industry, and how the games are developed.
