Editor's note: 'In 1612, during the Calmar war, the Swedes engaged a band of Scotch mercenaries, under the command of one of the Sinclair family, to make a diversion in their favour by landing on the coast of Norway, as told in the following ballad. If the poet has not exaggerated the number of the men engaged in the foray, it is more than probable that some tradition relative to it has been and still is current in Scotland as well as in Norway...'
