Notes

  • English translation of the title: Man Swallows Nature
  • English translation of first line: Man covers the earth with a shadow
  • The poem's title is in a font that grows larger with each letter, then smaller by the last word, representing the way that human beings overpower nature. The font of the words in the final line ('Uśmiecha się do nas ocaleniem' [It smiles at us with salvation]) grows smaller in the middle then larger, reflecting the growth of hope.
  • The Polish word 'człowiek' means something closer to 'human being' than the English 'man'. It is translated as 'man' here to retain the use of the singular noun.
