Notes

  • English translation of the title: Longing
  • English translation of first line: sensitive as a mimosa
  • Dedication: Jagodzie [To Jagoda]
  • The Polish word 'tęsknota' translates roughly as longing for home or for a beloved person, or as nostalgia. 'Tęsknota' is a significant cultural concept linked with the Polish history of exile in the 19th century, and Romantic poetry produced by exiled poets like Adam Mickiewicz. See Eva Hoffman Lost in Translation: Life in a New Language (1989, p. 4) and Anna Wierzbicka Semantics, Culture, and Cognition: Universal Human Concepts in Culture-Specific Configurations (1992, pp. 121-125) for discussions of 'tęsknota'.
