The secret history of a Sydney society man (who believes that, in his past work as a pearler on Thursday Island, he killed a man in a drunken brawl) leaves him vulnerable to the blackmailing activities of an old drinking buddy, and leaves his daughter vulnerable to the blackmailer's advances.
