Tells the simple story of a wombat's attempt to escape an approaching bushfire. The music, written by George Selwyn English and scored for an instrumental group of ten players, combines with the poetic narration to create a vivid and moving account of a very Australian phenomenon.

Notes

  • Although originally described as a 'feature', Death of a Wombat belongs to that area of overlap between drama and feature. Ivan Smith describes it as 'an impression in language and music of the deadly havoc that can be worked by bushfires in Australia.'
  • RCA released a sound recording of Death of a Wombat, backed with The First Waratah, in 1977.
