Comments

Percy Haslam was a journaist for the Newcastle Herald from 1933 to 1977, where he worked as its industrial and political roundsman and associate editor. Haslam had a keen interest in local history, including the history of transport, industry, and religion of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. He was also fascinated with local aboriginal history, and upon leaving the Herald took up a position at the University of Newcastle where he researched until his death in 1987. A more extensive biography can be found at: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/school/hss/research/publications/awaba/people/percy-haslam.html

Much of the collection relates to Haslam's interest in the history of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, including items related to the history of transport, religion, and industry in the region, as well as Haslam's extensive material on local Aboriginal history. There is, however, some interesting material on Newcastle area newspapers during the twentieth century.
